Institute for Government
The Institute for Government is an United Kingdom independent charity that aims to improve government effectiveness created in 2008. It was initially funded with about £15 million by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, at the instigation of Lord Sainsbury. Its first director was David Halpern, until his move to the Behavioural Insights Team in 2010. The institute has been referred to by Irish right-wing Libertarian blogger Paul Staines as "the most serious threat to freedom in Britain since the Communist party" 〔http://order-order.com/2013/03/18/hacked-off-donors-6-billionaire-labour-lord-sainsbury/〕
The Institutes' stated aims are to engage with Members of Parliament and top UK civil servants by:
* Supporting the development and skills of senior public servants, politicians and political advisors;
* Conducting and funding research on public administration and government;
* Providing ‘thought leadership’ on effective government through publications, seminars and events.
Its director is Rt Hon. Peter Riddell, a former senior fellow at the Institute. He has co-authored reports on government transitions and ministerial effectiveness and has been closely involved in work on political and constitutional reform. Peter Riddell stepped down from the Detainee inquiry at the end of 2011, a privy counsellor panel looking at whether the British Government was implicated in the improper treatment of detainees held by other countries. Peter is a regular broadcaster and has been a political commentator for forty years, notably for The Times and Financial Times.
On 4 November 2010, the charity was named Think Tank of the Year in Prospect Magazine's annual awards.
The Institute is based at 2 Carlton Gardens in central London.
